Since November 2007, the GHSG has been chaired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Engert. Under his direction the GHSG aims to further optimize first-line treatment in all stages of Hodgkin lymphoma and improve therapy for relapsed patients.
The GHSG focuses on minimizing treatment-related adverse effects while maintaining treatment efficacy. A major milestone was reached in 2010, when the results of the HD10 trial for early stage Hodgkin lymphoma patients were published in the world’s leading medical journal, the New England Journal of Medicine. The HD10 trial proved a short chemotherapy plus subsequent irradiation of the involved lymph node areas to be the ideal therapeutic combination, while the intensity of radiotherapy may even be reduced by 30% without impairing cure rates. This short treatment regimen is associated with clearly less adverse effects, and a significant reduction of treatment-induced late toxicities can be expected. Prof. Engert and his team are investigating upon these aspects in the currently ongoing trials, HD16, HD17 and HD18.
